Our commitment
to representing, advising and assisting
those charged with criminal offences
does not stop at conviction.
Prisoners have rights and we have
established a specialist prison
law department to address their
needs. We can offer representation
to prisoners in the following areas:
Parole
Applications
We will consider the parole
dossier, take instructions on the
contents and submit written representations
on behalf of the prisoner to the
Parole Board. We will represent
Lifers at their oral hearings and
we can also challenge unfavourable
decisions by way of judicial review.
Appeal
Against Decision to Revoke a Licence.
When a licence has been
revoked a prisoner is entitled to
submit an appeal to the Parole Board.
We will assist in a similar way
to parole applications in an effort
to have the prisoner re-released
under licence as soon as possible.
Adjudications.
Where a prisoner has been
charged with a breach of the Prison
Rules they may be referred to an
Independent Adjudicator who is able
to add days onto their sentence.
We can represent the prisoner at
the hearing.
Appeals.
We can present advice
in relation to appeal against conviction
and/or sentence with a view to an
application to the Court of Appeal
or the Criminal Cases Review Commission
(CCRC). We will always endeavour
to be honest and forthright about
the prospects of success and will
not assist with an appeal unless
we feel there are strong grounds,
thereby reducing the risk of days
as an appellant being added on to
the sentence.
Categorisation.
We offer advice and assistance
with applications to be downgraded
and annual category reviews.
We will submit written representations
on behalf of the Cat A prisoner
and advise all categories as to
the prospect of challenging a refusal
to downgrade.
Progression.
If a prisoner is not making
any progress through the prison
system we will look at the risk
assessments that have been completed
and attempt to assist with this,
advising and making representations
in relation to transfer if necessary.
Prisoners'
Day to Day Problems.
If a prisoner is having
difficulties with any aspect of
his/her prison life and the internal
complaints procedure has failed
to resolve the issue we will look
at the papers and discuss the matter
and advise whether there is anything
we can do to assist.
