All at Henry Hyams were greatly saddened to learn of the death of former senior partner Ian Vellins, who died peacefully in London on Friday 5 April 2024 at the age of 85. Our sincere condolences are extended to Selma, their daughters Wendy, Joanna and Stephanie, and grandchildren.
Ian was born in Leeds and graduated from Oxford University with a first-class honours’ degree, after which he qualified as a solicitor. He initially practiced in Bradford before joining Henry Hyams as a partner in 1973, where he developed the commercial and non-contentious side of the business. Renowned for his sharp intellect and tireless work ethic, Ian combined his practice with part-time judicial appointments as an immigration judge and chair of the VAT Tribunal.
Following his retirement as a partner in 1998, Ian remained as a consultant with Henry Hyams for many years, continuing to look after his loyal clients and offering ever supportive advice and assistance to those trying to fill his very large shoes.
Ian was an active and very involved member of the Leeds Jewish community and a keen amateur dramatist.
He will be sadly missed.
